Unscheduled maintenance

4:00am ?!?! what on earth woke me up at this ungodly hour ?! As i slowly regained consciousness the obvious answer became clear. Yep, it must have been the loud beeping noise coming from the “server room”..

When opening the somewhat sound-insulated door i recognized the ‘beeping’, it was the RAID controller in the fileserver which clearly has had an argument with one of the disks.. Although i didn’t really appreciate it at that moment, I must say Intel did a nice job to encorporate a buzzer in their product. If something is able to wake me up in the middle of the night, it must be good :-)

It wasn’t hard to find the other suspect of this disturbance, the faulty disk was clearly pointed out by the  ’overheat’ indicator on the SATA RAID enclosure, which also has a nice alarm buzzer. Luckily not as loud as the Intel controller and easy to shut off. At the press of a button i  ’reset’ the enclosure alarm, a few seconds of terminal-keyboard action later and the RAID controller alarm was silenced as well. And back to bed I went…

This is what i found the next morning:

raid5-rebuild

.. along with an astounishing 5 MB/sec read/write performance on the file shares. I had planned to do some TCP/IP optimization on my workstation to boost iSCSI performance. Today is clearly not the day for that kind of stuff. Ah well, I’m off to do some shopping then..

I have glanced at quite a few of your current blog entries and I had been curious about if you were interesting in swapping blog links? I am often looking to trade links with personal blogs on very similar subject matter! I look forward to hearing back from you before long.
